Frequently Asked Questions
Which cloud platforms does Cloud MX currently support?
Cloud MX is officially supported and qualified on AWS & GCP.
What type/size of cloud instance is needed for Cloud MX Audio Mixer?
AWS: The Cloud MX Audio Mixer operates on an AWS EC2 Windows Server 2019 or higher. We recommend starting with a g4dn.4xlarge type instance. If you plan to use numerous processing-intensive plugins, you may need to scale up to a larger instance with more CPU power, such as an 8xlarge or higher.
GCP: The Cloud MX Audio Mixer operates on a Google GCE Windows Server 2019 or higher. We recommend starting with an n1-standard-8 instance. If you plan to use numerous processing-intensive plugins, you may need to scale up to a larger instance with more CPU power.
Can more than one Cloud MX instance be used, such that multiple instances can access and process audio from the same sources?
Yes. The Cloud MX Audio Mixer is NDI® & Dante®-compatible, which means it can be discovered and routed to any number of instances in the cloud. When setting up, just make sure to allow access to all the instances that need to receive/send the NDI or Dante streams between one another.
Can more than one controller be used with the Cloud MX Audio Mixer?
One FIT controller and/or one Mackie/MIDI controller.
*To use 2 FIT controllers together, specific settings are required. For assistance with setting up 2 FIT controllers with Cloud MX, contact our customer support team.
Can I monitor my Cloud MX mix without NDI®-compatible gear?
Yes. The Waves ASIO Control Panel for NDI features an 'Enable Local Audio' option. Using this feature allows you to directly map two output patches from Cloud MX to the Windows system audio within the cloud instance. When using PCoIP virtualization tools like AWS NICE DCV, this ensures the audio is seamlessly directed to the speaker setup of your remote computer.
Can a Cloud MX instance be terminated without losing the Cloud MX license?
When setting up your instance, you have two options for license activation: activating the license on the local disk drive or on an additional virtual drive (EBS in AWS or Persistent Disk in GCP).
We recommend using an additional virtual drive for license storage. This allows you to terminate the instance without needing to deactivate the license beforehand. In contrast, if the license is activated and associated with the system’s internal drive, you must first deactivate the license using Waves Central before terminating the instance.
Note that as long as the cloud instance is only stopped or restarted and not terminated, the license should remain active.
How do I set Cloud MX with the Dante Connect eco system?
On your Cloud MX instance, install the Dante Virtual Soundcard v4.4 (or a newer version). Ensure it's licensed and linked to your Dante Domain Manager for Dante Connect in the cloud. In Cloud MX, choose Dante Virtual Soundcard as your audio device. Use the Dante Controller application to route the Dante Driver to your chosen Dante source or destination. From there, you can connect the Dante driver to specific Cloud MX channels or output buses.
When transmitting Dante audio across different subnets you might need to use a Dante Gateway device at every location to facilitate the audio transfer and clock management. For more information on this matter, please reach out Audinate support directly.
How can I automate the deployment of Cloud MX mixer and its environment?
Waves Central’s Remote Assistance Mode: With Waves Central, the hub for managing Waves licenses and installations, you can use automated activation and installation capabilities. You can automate deployments by creating a URL that triggers the installation and activation of Cloud MX and its plugins remotely and non-interactively.
Using PowerShell Scripts: Waves provides comprehensive automated scripts that enable you to efficiently deploy an environment with minimal effort. These scripts automate the activation, installation, and configuration of all relevant applications and drivers, ensuring reliable and repeatable deployments.
Setups
AWS Setup for the Cloud MX Audio Mixer
An Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon G4dn EC2) instance for Windows Server 2019 or later, with NICE DCV and GPU drivers, are used to run the Cloud MX Audio Mixer, the Waves ASIO Control Panel for NDI® and/or Dante® Virtual Soundcard, and the Waves Central application.
Amazon NICE DCV remote display protocol is used for high-performance remote access to the Cloud MX Audio Mixer application within the customer’s VPC.
An Internet Gateway allows communication between the instance in the VPC and the Waves license server, to authorize and activate Waves software licenses.
Waves Cloud MX application software is installed on an Amazon EBS Volume that stores the Windows Server OS and related software.
Waves software licenses can be activated either on the system drive’s EBS or an external EBS.
Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Setup for Cloud MX
A Google Compute Engine (n1-standard-8) instance for Windows Server 2019 or later, with PCoIP Virtualization software and NVIDIA GPU drivers, is used to run the Waves Cloud MX Audio Mixer, the Waves ASIO Control Panel for NDI® and the Waves Central Applications.
PCoIP Virtualization software such as Teradici® or Parsec® is used for high-performance remote access to the Waves Cloud MX Audio Mixer application.
An Internet Gateway allows communication between the instance in the VPC and the Waves license server, to authorize and activate Waves software licenses.
Waves Cloud MX application software is installed on a Persistent Disk Volume that stores the Windows Server OS and related software. Waves software licenses can be activated either on the system or to an external Persistent Disk.
