Mixing Multiband Drums – Flanged Top, Beefy Lows

Sep 30, 2020 | 9,057 Views

Sometimes you need to treat different frequency ranges of a drum bus differently in order to get a crisp, distinctive overall drum sound. While applying compression and EQ to individual tracks is usually the way to go – using StudioRack’s multiband splitter on the full ranged drum bus can give very “organic” sounding results, especially when combined with modulation and saturation.

In this video producer/engineer Ken Andrews (Paramore, Failure, Jimmy Eat World) shares his signature StudioRack chain preset for multiband drum processing and shows how to combine low-end saturation with top-end modulation for modern drums magic.

Plugins included in Ken’s “Beefy Bottoms Flanged Top” StudioRack chain: Abbey Road Saturator, Trans-X, Linear Phase EQ, MDMX Distortion Modules, Greg Wells VoiceCentric, MetaFlanger, and the Aphex Vintage Aural Exciter.
